FINISHED! Boardwalk Jersey: Square, cut and sewn

Boardwalk Jersey Square, Cut and Sewn
I wasn't going to let a little fall onto my back stop me for too long before I got some in situ shots of my new top.  I went to work today, but got home with just a teensy bit of sun - just enoughfor a few photos.

I know you are sick of me talking about this top, but it is number 6/11 Square, Cut and Sewn from She has a Mannish Style. One of my favourite Japanese pattern books and certainly the one with the best name!

Boardwalk Jersey Square, Cut and Sewn I used the fabric Boardwalk Jersey that I purchased on my recent trip to Tessuti.  I only bought around a metre (or maybe 1.20) for this top, so as mentioned before, I couldn't do a repeat with the pattern which is around 90cm, so improvised.  The back doesn't at all match the front, although I tried where possible to match some lines. I think it works better like this. It adds so much more interest to the pattern than what I think would have been there with just a two stripe match.

Sadly I didn't have enough to do the binding piece on the bottom, which (as it is interfaced like the collar) would have added a bit more weight to the bottom.

I don't think it is a big problem, but it would certainly have been neater than my twin needle seam.

The other thing, is that in hindsight, I could have moved the buttons just a fraction of an inch to either side to prevent the back rising up and making me look like a hunchback... although that probably has something to do with the fact that I am standing like a hunchback :(

The 'sleeves' are quite loose but again that is the style in the pattern photo. Maybe these could be tightened up a little for next time, but really, these are minor things. The top is lovely and 'swingy' to wear and the buttons across the shoulder add the cutest detail, that, unless you swing around, sit nice and flat.  This top will be perfect for the warm weather (in about 3 months time :))

  1. I'm glad you were able to post 'action' pics so quickly! This is a great top and you were right - the fabric was perfect for it! This is definitely a shirt I would wear often. You could probably wear a fitted long sleeve tee under it since it's cold. Was someone taking these pics or was it by self timer - I'm asking since you have a great 'cat ate the mouse' expression in the last one!

  2. This is such a cool top! Such a good call matching the fabric with that pattern. And the buttoned shoulders with the fabric add a nice nautical feel. I've never tried any of the Japanese pattern books but hope to eventually!

  3. Thanks Morgan. I'm really pleased with the fabric/pattern marriage! Sometimes the Japanese books have some really interesting patterns that are fun to make up - once you get past finding the pattern in a sea of other patterns and the limited instructions :)

  7. Great top, I was so glad to see the rest of your photos as I saw your early photo and I loved it so from that photo I started on my own! I am just finishing the button placements and very happy with it! I quested it needed interfacing in the neck band but was surprised to hear it called for it in the bottom band? I haven't put the band on yet but think I might leave it out? Mine is in a jersey crape. I think I will make it into a dress also?
Thanks for sharing all your lovely work!

  8. Penny, I can't wait to see yours. I wish that I'd been able to add the proper band onto mine and given I used a lovely lightweight interfacing I think it would have worked well but, it works just as well without it. I'm so happy to see your Perthians (is that what you call someone from Perth?) embracing this top. I have had this book for a while and never really thought of making this until this fabric popped up. I think it will make a great dress.

  13. Hi Colette, of course you can shamefully or shamelessly copy this top. I think the fabric was absolutely made for this top so it would be a shame for there not to be more than one out there!!! Agree, that it is the perfect spring/summer top and can't wait for it to be on high rotation in the wardrobe. Yes of coures you can share it...I would be super excited for it to be on your blog/facebook.
