After
lamenting my lack of a sewing project on Friday, on Saturday I decided that instead of panic buying fabric* at the
local fabric sale, to fit one of the patterns I would like to make up (of which nothing really struck me), I'd just try and get on with the couple of projects that were sitting dormant in the sewing cupboard. I don't know why it was such a problem that I didn't have a project on the go, but it was. I should have known that it never works for me to have a pattern in mind and to go looking for fabric, it usually only works the other way around. That, at least is my justification for buying patterns - I never know when the perfect material will come along!
Anyway, do you remember the tartan from my
cape? Well at the same time I also bought a pink colourway, with the intention of making another
Charlotte skirt. Yes,
another one. What can I say, it is a great work skirt for me. So I spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon getting on with the Charlotte and lazily listening to the
podcasts on Suzy Hausfrau (I'm barely a beginner knitter but loved listening to these podcasts and think that
pompon magazine is probably a must buy! Check out the cute socks :)). I made good progress with it but packed it away at dinner time.

Double Tilly: Mathilde + Miette |
The boys are all about superman at the moment, so for some reason, we decided to watch the cinematic masterpiece (!?) Superman 3. Clearly I didn't need to focus too hard on the movie, so I decided to do something else at the same time...so I cut out
Tilly's Miette. I bought and taped this together ages ago, so the pattern was ready to go. Originally I had bought some folksy denim patchwork fabric from Spotlight, but when I got that home there were a couple of strategic cuts in the fabric which rendered it useless for the skirt, due to the 'bare minimum' that I had bought. I tried to make it shorter but it just wasn't right at that length. On that same day I had bought metres of a dark denim - because I liked the wash, so it was destined to be the Miette. It was clearly fate, because I prefer this one and Ben hated the other fabric (maybe I should check finger prints on the scissors to see if he cut into the fabric!!)
The plan was to just cut it out and have it ready to go on another day. But then I thought I'd sew up the seams Oh and maybe just make up the waistband. Mmm, well, now I'm this far along, I may as well finish it. And there it was. A finished Miette!
It was exactly the sort of project I felt like - it is simple and comes together so quickly. Nice long meditative sewing. Nothing complicated.

The only change I made to the pattern was to sew down the seams. My design feature (or was it laziness because it was already in the overlocker !!) is the bright pink overlocking of the seams. Yep, a way out there design feature!
I think this will see a lot of wear. In fact, when I was trying it on with things, it just seems to go with everything. I've gone with a bit of double Tilly for these photos with my
Mathilde paired with the Miette, but in fact today I'm wearing it with my
sugar tee and a cardigan.
There was a bit of discussion over at
Claire's the other day about making up clothes for work or for play and this skirt has surprised me. I think it could go into both. Despite it being denim, the dark wash dresses it up a bit.
Thanks Tilly for another great make!
*disclosure: I did buy one piece of fabric, but given I've made this up in stash fabric - I'm still good with my one in one out semi pledge (which I might formalise one day).... I still have metres left of the denim, but I have at least made a dent in it.
