I have just returned from a week in Sydney with somewhat more fabric for the stash than was entirely necessary, but that's what happens when you go fabric shopping at Tessuti and The Fabric Store and it is really only when I visit these stores that I stash add like this. I was joined by the very lovely Amy, Emma and Maria and my sister. This was my first 'in real life' official meeting with fellow bloggers and gosh I was nervous! Luckily the girls were even lovelier than I had imagined them to be and I can't wait to do it again!
My workable* stash of fashion fabric is now at an all time high of 12 pieces.. not counting the boxes and boxes of scrap fabrics that I have. A list of all the fabrics in the stash is on my current project details page.

The top piece is a checked lurex (!) which Emma and I both bought 1.2m of from the Fabric Store. We have a mini challenge going on with this fabric and we have decided that the big reveal of our respective makes will be Valentines Day. If it works I might wear it to a wedding in March.
There is a stretch lace in the pile which I also noticed on Little Betty Sews blog post last night. Also some striped denim for maybe a Ninot Jacket and this cord (sadly only in the Autumn colour way) for another attempt of the Rigel Bomber.
Those of you who follow me on instagram, may remember this fabric. It is baby blue faux fur and I just love the idea of it made up into a Rigel Bomber, but alas I left it on the shelf frightened by the construction.
For now, I have another week off to potter around the house with the kids before they go back to school and I go back to work next week, to tidy up the sewing cupboard so I can fit my new fabric in and to finish the Sigma Dress which arrived in the mail while I was away.
*In the interests of disclosure, I also have 2 other pieces that I will probably never use that are sitting on the very top shelf of the cupboard - which I can't reach so forget about them.
Gorgeous! I love the cord. I have the Sigma dress en route to me - hopefully it arrives today as I want to make it to wear to the first of my sister's engagement parties. What are you making yours from?
ReplyDeleteI made an easy cowl dress from the fabric third from the top. I really love it.. so light and comfy. I hope to make some knickers from the scraps. Although I bought it 2 years ago at the Fabric Store in Brisbane. Opps what I wanted to say (before I got dizzy over your fabric) was just go for the Rigel jacket - it will be fine!
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm following in your footsteps today! First blogger meet up for me too, heading to my 2 favourite Sydney haunts - TFS & TF, then to explore new places :)
ReplyDeleteLovely fabrics! I hope to visit Tessuti one day :) You're so organised in keeping track of your stash, and 12 is truly very very reasonable :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a very nice fabric haul...I'm too scared to buying anything at those nice shops at this stage incase I machine it to death with my novice skills! Glad you had a great time in Sydney - I get nervous meeting new blogging people too but mostly it's fun.
ReplyDeleteThe more times you meet sewing bloggers, the easier it gets, but I still get a hint of nerves. I'm so glad we finally met.
ReplyDeleteYour challenge piece will Emma will be great to see. Everyone has a different point of view. Enjoy your week at home :)
See you again:)
Great fabric choices! It sounds like you had a lot of fun. I can't wait to see the Sigma dress. I think you should just go ahead and order the faux fur :).
ReplyDeleteYou must have so much self control! My stash is pretty out of control, ever since I went crazy at the fabric shops in San Francisco and New York. Even so, whenever I have a new idea for something to sew, I never have quite the right thing and have to go to The Fabric Store in order to get The Right Thing! Hence, the stash grows exponentially. Love your purchases though!
ReplyDeleteI love that cord! I've walked past it too many times. Sounds like you did some great shopping. Sadly, I have been with kids 24/7 for the last two weeks while hubby is away so I am desperate to get back out for a solo fabric shop when he gets back in a weeks time. It will be straight to Surry Hills for me ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have just had a big cleanup of my teensy tiny scraps so feel a lot better about the cupboard being able to accommodate 12. Tessuti is lovely because it's not overwhelming!
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great time and bought heaps.
ReplyDeleteFrom the stretchy lace? That's a great idea. And yes, that damn bomber will haunt me :)
ReplyDeleteI hope your SIgma arrived. I'm making it in weather inappropriate denim as a tester to see if I like it. What about you?
ReplyDeleteThanks Kirsty, yes I did, and yes I did! Met up with @_MeasureTwice, had a ball!
ReplyDeleteFantastic!!
ReplyDeleteIt hasn't arrived! Gah! I don't know re: fabric yet. Either stretch cotton from Tessuti or ikat cotton-linen from The Drapery with no stretch. Do you think I need stretch? I can't wait to see yours!
ReplyDeleteWoot, woot! Love your new stash. Can't wait to see your Sigma!
ReplyDeleteGotta say that's why I love a pdf! The denim I used has stretch but it is too big in the back (boo). I've just taken photos so it will be ready tomorrow on the blog. Most versions I've seen aren't in stretch although if it's fitted I tend to like a bit of stretch in there. Both choices sound lovely.
ReplyDeleteShopping for fabric is so much fun! Great choices, Kristy! Good for you for keeping your stash at a manageable size. I think if I kept my that way, I would be more productive. Too many options for me at the moment. It's kind of like looking in a full closet of clothes and stating that there is nothing to wear in there.
ReplyDeleteLove the fabrics! I have that pink knit at the bottom of your pile…still unmade at my house so I can't wait to see what you do with yours!
ReplyDeleteWhat self restraint! And scraps can hang around for soooo long and in my experience don't fit any pattern in the cupboard. Another excuse to buy yet another piece of fabric to fit that pattern!
ReplyDeleteBut it's very hard to throw away liberty scraps however tiny they are.
sumu
Hi Rachel. I've made the Sigma twice - once in a cotton twill and the other in a liberty cotton - both non-stretch. There seems to be plenty of ease in the pattern so probably no need for stretch, but i also think it would look great in a light stretch cotton. Good luck. You can see my two on http://my-zee-moo.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/papercut-sigma-dress.html
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed your first blogger meetup- they're so much fun aren't they?! I was so sorry not to get to meet Amy when she was over in London - very jealous!
ReplyDeleteAlso, what a brilliant stash! If love to get mine down a bit but not much chance to sew at the minute!
Thanks Jillian! Just posted it now :)
ReplyDeleteI hear you. I feel a bit that way now at just 11 pieces left in the stash. It really works better for me to have just a couple of pieces.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you planning to do with it? I was thinking of a little jumper but not sure. It also has a big stain on it that didn't come out in the wash so I will have to be careful with pattern placemen :(
ReplyDeleteOh I agree re the Liberty scraps. They never get thrown out! and you are so right those other scraps don't fit any pattern and for me, once I've made something out of a fabric, I'm unlikely to want to make anything else. Must get over that!
ReplyDeleteAmy is so nice and charming and beautiful!! It was such a fun morning that I'm a bit hooked now. Don't worry your sewing days will come back! Those sleep times are perfect for getting a few things done. If he sleeps that is! :)
ReplyDeleteIt really hasn't arrived? when is the engagement party? Will you have time to sew?
ReplyDeleteI thought to make a sweatshirt, either zippered or pull over, short sleeve most likely. Have to think carefully as I bought the last metre they had here in Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm thinking short sleeved too. The roll was barely touched at the Fabric Store in Sydney so if you need more they should have heaps there!
ReplyDeleteUmmm...maybe I will! Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteJust 12 pieces that is so disciplined. Sorry I missed you on the meet up. Maria is a real life sewing buddy of mine.
ReplyDeleteLucky you!!! And those fabrics look so good!
ReplyDeleteNope, it hasn't arrived. I'm onto Plan B (as you saw on Instagram!). I'm a bit bummed - had visions of the Sigma. Ah well. x
